Children’s Ministry

** Now Available: Our Sunday School Curriculum! Written by our very own Mary Boyce Hicks, Christie Walker, and Kemp Hill, and based upon Robert Capon’s book Kingdom, Grace, and Judgement.

At Christ Church the goal of the Children’s Ministry is to communicate welcome. First off, the welcome of the gospel–as sinners we are welcomed into fellowship with God through the blood of Christ. Additionally, we hope that children and families will experience authentic welcome from our teachers and staff.

We embrace the concept in Romans 10:17 that “faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” Our focus is to tell the stories of Scripture and trust the Holy Spirit to move in the lives of our children. Above all we desire for our families to know that despite our perennial bent toward disobedience, God is faithful.

We are using the curriculum “Show Me Jesus” for Pre-K to 5th grade. Each Bible truth of the curriculum is enhanced with our own emphasis on grace. A loving team of volunteer teachers uses story, drama and crafts to unfold these truths. For weekly updates on classroom activity, visit http://www.kidsatchristchurch.blogspot.com.

Programming is organized by Christie Walker and Kemp Hill with assistance by Mary Boyce Hicks. For more information or to enroll your child contact Kemp Hill at (434)-977-3481 or email kids@christchurchcville.org. Hope to see you in Sunday School!

During the 9:00AM service, children ages 3 – 8 are invited to Children’s Chapel.  Children are excused from church during the sermon and return during “the peace” in time to take communion with their family. Simple songs and finger plays help children learn the Bible story. Interactive Bible stories give the details and heart of each Bible story as they are read and children are guided in responding and reacting.  Chapel is approximately 30 minutes and is led by members of our teaching team.

Sunday School classes run from 10:10 AM to 10:50 AM.  Classes are held in the following locations:

  • Preschool – Kindergarten: Upstairs Fitzhugh House
  • Grades 1-2 – Downstairs classroom across from Fitzhugh House wing
  • Grade 3 – Upstairs at the end of the hall
  • Grades 4-5 – Classroom beside the Monticello Room
  • Collect for Purity

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, page 355)

The Word

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

The Prayer

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 222)
