Loaves & Fishes began in 1980, when the church secretary, Gail Pryor, kept food in paper bags under her desk and would pass them out as needed to people who came to the church office. Ramsey Richardson, the Rector of Christ Episcopal Church at the time, established a program with a local downtown sandwich shop and issued “chits” to those in need. They would take their chits to the sandwich shop and redeem them for lunch.
Richardson joined forces with the priest from Holy Comforter Catholic Church. The first soup kitchen was held at Christ Church around 1981. Since then, four other churches have joined Christ Church and Holy Comforter. They are First United Methodist, First Presbyterian, First Christian, and Park St. Baptist Church.
In 2011, Loaves and Fishes fed 6231 people at a cost of $8347, or about $1.33 per meal.
