Alice Layman

Choir Director and Organist

Alice holds degrees in Organ Performance (B.A. Hollins College, 1974 and M. Mus. University of Kentucky, 1977). Since 1977, Alice has served several Episcopal churches in Charlottesville: Church of Our Saviour (1977-1982), Christ Episcopal Church (1982-1996) and St. Paul’s, Ivy (2000-2012), and she returned to Christ Episcopal Church in 2012.

Alice directs the Adult Choir, the Junior Choir, and the Bell Choir, and she oversees the carillon (one of only five carillons in Virginia).  She also oversees the Bach’s Lunch Concert Series (Thursdays in May) and the Organ Concert Series (Thursdays in October).   Locally, Alice serves as the accompanist for the Virginia Concert adult choral ensemble. In her free time, Alice is free lance accompanist for musicals and high school choirs, and she is an avid duplicate bridge player.  Alice is married to Steve Layman, and they have two grown daughters, Laura and Martha, and three grandchildren.
