Alex Johnson | Music Director

Alex has served as Director of Music at Christ Church since 2021, where he directs the adult and children’s choirs, the bell choir, and plays organ for Sunday morning services. He is also the co-director of the chamber group Ars Memoria, which specializes in musical performances with emphasis on historical and social contexts.

Active as a soloist and as a collaborative musician, Alex’s past performances have included recitals on historic organs in Virginia and Pennsylvania; collaborative recitals at James Madison University, in Boston, and in Charlottesville; and the world premiere, with orchestra, of Florence Price’s cantata Abraham Lincoln walks at midnight.

Alex has received degrees in piano performance and collaborative piano from Shenandoah Conservatory and Longy School of Music. He is a Choir Master (ChM) and Colleague (CAGO) of the American Guild of Organists, and serves on the board of the Charlottesville-Albemarle chapter of the Guild. He and his wife Shannon enjoy making music together, and love to spend their non-musical time with their cat, reading, and doing historical reenactment.
